In Australia you can get all of it from an Indian grocer if you have one nearby, from a few good national online shops that ship everywhere, or, at a pinch, from the mainstream stores that now stock a seasonal Diwali range. Here is where to look, city by city, and what the big chains actually carry.

A quick shopping list

If you want the short version, this covers a good home celebration without over-buying:

• Diyas or LED tealights — a dozen or more. Clay diyas for the doorstep and puja, battery LED ones for anywhere near curtains, smoke alarms or small children.
• Rangoli colours or a stencil — one pack of assorted colours goes a long way, or a stencil if you want an intricate design fast.
• Fairy lights and a toran — warm-white or amber string lights for a doorway or balcony, and a hanging toran over the main door.
• Puja samagri — a small Lakshmi or Ganesh idol, incense, cotton wicks, ghee or lamp oil, and roli and rice for the tilak. Your grocer usually sells a ready-made puja kit.

The mainstream stores (yes, really)

You no longer have to find an Indian grocer to decorate for Diwali. Big W stocks a seasonal Diwali range, including its Diwali Elephant and Diya Swirl decorations and spiral swirl hanging decorations, which are cheap and cheerful for a first celebration. IKEA markets its AROMATISK collection around Diwali, and its everyday tealight and candle range works perfectly well for lamps. These are the easiest fallback if you are far from any Indian retail or you have simply left it late.

Making the doorstep yours
