Raksha Bandhan 2026 · Australia

Raksha Bandhan is Friday 28 August 2026, 34 days away

For most families here, Rakhi is a festival of distances. A thread has to cross a state or an ocean by a date that won’t move. This guide covers what other Rakhi guides skip: when to tie it in your city, the last safe dates to post, what Indian customs and Australian biosecurity actually allow, and where to buy a rakhi locally.

Sending within Australia?

A rakhi posts as a $1.70 letter; gifts go Parcel or Express Post. See the post-by dates. Express stretches to late August.

Sending to India?

Post the rakhi alone. It’s exempt from India’s gift-import ban. Anything packed with it gets taxed at 53.60% or refused. Here’s how to do it right.

The customs-proof way

Family in India sending here?

Australia has festival-specific biosecurity rules. Seed- and flower-decorated rakhis and milk sweets get destroyed or returned. Share this guide with them.

Raksha Bandhan 2026: quick answers

When is Raksha Bandhan in 2026?

Friday 28 August 2026. Same day in Australia and India. Every major panchang source agrees. The Purnima tithi ends at 9:48 AM IST on the 28th, which is 2:18 PM AEST, 1:48 PM ACST and 12:18 PM AWST. Most families tie the rakhi in the morning or early afternoon here.

Is Raksha Bandhan a public holiday in Australia?

No. Raksha Bandhan is not a gazetted public holiday in any Australian state or territory. In 2026 it falls on an ordinary working Friday. The tying window runs from sunrise to early afternoon, so many families do the ceremony before work or school, or over an evening video call with family in India.

What time should I tie the rakhi in my city?

The auspicious window on Friday 28 August 2026 runs from local sunrise until the Purnima tithi ends: Sydney 6:19 AM to 2:18 PM, Melbourne 6:48 AM to 2:18 PM, Brisbane 6:06 AM to 2:18 PM, Canberra 6:29 AM to 2:18 PM, Adelaide 6:41 AM to 1:48 PM, and Perth 6:39 AM to 12:18 PM. Perth closes earliest. In WA, do it before midday.

Is there bhadra on Raksha Bandhan 2026?

No, 2026 is a bhadra-free Raksha Bandhan. Bhadra (the span during which tying rakhi is traditionally avoided) ends before sunrise on 28 August everywhere in Australia and India, so the entire morning window is auspicious. Many years do have a bhadra restriction. This one does not.

When do I need to post a rakhi or gift by?

Within Australia: a rakhi as a $1.70 small letter by around Sunday 16 August, a Parcel Post gift by Monday 17 August, Express Post by Monday 24 August. To India: Standard parcel by Thursday 6 August, Express by Tuesday 11 August, Courier by Thursday 13 August. All dates include a safety buffer. The post-by dates page has the full table.
