Sending a rakhi to Australia: what clears the border

The factsheet names seed- and flower-decorated rakhi threads as the risk item. So ask family to choose a rakhi with no seeds, grains or dried flowers on it: plain thread, fabric, plastic or metal decoration instead. That advice is our reading of the risk list. DAFF itself does not publish a “permitted materials” list, and BICON conditions govern individual items.

What happens at the border

All inbound mail is assessed by X-ray, detector dogs and manual inspection. Goods that do not meet import conditions are destroyed or sent back to the overseas sender. Treatment, where available, costs A$94 per item at the importer’s expense. Concealing goods can lead to investigation and prosecution. The safe path is always to declare contents accurately.

When family should post it

India Post publishes no official timing or tariff for EMS to Australia (only the 20 kg weight limit is official). The figures above are those typically cited by logistics aggregators, with our safety buffer applied. Earlier is safer.

The 30-second checklist to send to family

1. 1Choose a rakhi with no seeds, grains or dried flowers. Plain thread, fabric, plastic or metal decoration.
2. 2No sweets, no homemade food. If sweets must come, commercially sealed and accurately declared, and know they may still not make it.
3. 3Leave out the roli-chawal sachet (rice and grains are on the risk list). It can be bought here.
4. 4Declare the contents accurately: “cotton rakhi thread (festival item)”. Concealing contents risks the parcel and the sender.
5. 5Post by early August with EMS, or use the rakhi services with Australian dispatch instead.
