Carnatic Classical Music with Bhairavi Raman & Nanthesh Sivarajah

Experience an intimate afternoon of South Indian classical music with Melbourne-based violinist Bhairavi Raman and mridangam player Nanthesh Sivarajah. The duo explores both traditional Carnatic repertoire and contemporary directions, drawing on over twenty years of combined performance experience. Their extensive training in both Carnatic and Western classical traditions allows them to create a distinctive musical voice that blends technical precision with expressive depth.

Bhairavi Raman's violin playing moves seamlessly between tradition and innovation while remaining grounded in the melodic and improvisational language of Carnatic music. Nanthesh Sivarajah is a percussionist and multidisciplinary artist whose mastery of the mridangam brings rhythmic sensitivity and dynamism, creating intricate dialogues that are both virtuosic and deeply collaborative. Between them they have given more than 400 performances across Australia and internationally, including at the Madras Music Academy in Chennai, Melbourne Recital Centre and Belvoir St Theatre. Drawing on their shared Tamil heritage, they use music to explore memory, identity, inheritance and transformation, honouring centuries-old lineages while leaving room for experimentation and improvisation.

Running order on the day: doors open 5:00pm, performance 5:30pm to 6:30pm, with the session listed as running one hour thirty minutes in total. Tickets are a single type at $59.54 including Eventbrite fees, and the organiser's policy is no refunds.

The concert is at the Tom Mann Theatre, 136 Chalmers Street, Surry Hills, and is presented by Worlds Within Worlds, a Sydney-based record label showcasing classical music from India, Iran, Afghanistan and beyond, which exists to give a platform to younger, emerging artists grounded in classical training.
