Weaving Tales with Gond Motifs - A Gond Art Workshop

Step into the intricate and imaginative world of Gond tribal art, a vibrant traditional art form practised by the Gond people of India, in a hands-on evening workshop at Mitcham Memorial Library.

Participants discover how simple lines, rhythmic patterns and symbols drawn from nature and mythology come together to tell powerful visual stories. Guided step by step, you explore key Gond techniques and motifs, then create and paint your own Gond-inspired artwork on canvas. Drawing on personal stories or ideas, you turn pattern into narrative and leave with a finished canvas alive with colour, movement and meaning.

The workshop is led by Sandhya Mulchandani, an Adelaide-based relief and papier-mache sculptor, exhibiting artist and art educator whose practice blends traditional Indian art forms with contemporary storytelling. Her workshops are warm and accessible and welcome all skill levels, including complete beginners, while grounding the activity in the cultural context behind the art form. Sandhya will also be exhibiting at Mitcham Memorial Library during SALA in August 2026.

All materials are provided — just bring your curiosity and a story to tell through art. The session runs two hours, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM on Wednesday 5 August 2026, and is designed for ages 18 and over.
