About This Event
Sanchaara — an emerging Brisbane initiative bringing South Asian art to new stages and audiences — presents Ānanda: Dance of Joy (pronounced aa-nun-dah) at SunPAC this October, featuring internationally acclaimed Bharathanatyam dancer Christopher Gurusamy.
Ānanda, meaning joy or bliss, is explored through Christopher's relationship with dance, as for him, dance is a path to joy. With foundations in Bharathanatyam's classical traditions, the work draws on Indian poetry, Hindu philosophy and Carnatic music alongside Christopher's contemporary Australian perspective. Ānanda moves from intricate rhythmic passages to expressive storytelling through moments of devotion, desire and joy.
Previously presented at Eternity Playhouse (Sydney), DanceHouse (Melbourne) and Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (Mumbai), Ānanda received critical acclaim, including a four-star review in The Age and a Green Room Award nomination for Outstanding Performer.
Whether discovering Bharathanatyam for the first time or already an enthusiast, all are invited to experience ānanda through the artistry of one of Australia's leading Bharathanatyam artists.
