About This Event
Cut Chilli is a new play by Chenturan Aran, presented at Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre as part of Darebin Arts Speakeasy, the council’s year-round independent performance program. The season runs from 12 to 23 August 2026, with performances Wednesday to Friday at 7:30pm, Saturday at 6:30pm and Sunday at 5:00pm.
Jamie was abandoned as an infant in Sri Lanka and raised in Western Australia. When he becomes involved with Zahra, a podcast activist investigating international adoption fraud, he begins to question his adoptive mother Katherine’s account of his origins. As Jamie digs into his own past, long-buried family secrets surface with serious consequences.
The work was nominated for the 2025 NSW Literary Prizes and examines cultural identity, displacement and ancestry through the lens of Sri Lanka’s adoption fraud scandal. It played the Old Fitz Theatre in Sydney in July 2026 before this Melbourne season.
