About This Event
The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne brings its Independence Day celebration back to Federation Square on Saturday 15 August 2026, starting at 10:00am. The flag hoisting is the centrepiece of the morning, and IFFM says a mystery guest has been locked in to raise the flag this year, with the name held back until closer to the day.
Around the flag hoisting the square is programmed as a free family day out: live dance performances, free film screenings, food trucks, and the chance to meet visiting celebrities. The celebration has drawn major Indian film guests in past years - Aamir Khan was the honoured guest at the 2025 edition.
Entry is free and no ticket or registration is mentioned. Federation Square is on the corner of Swanston and Flinders Streets, directly opposite Flinders Street Station, so trains and trams are the easiest way in; there is no dedicated event parking. IFFM notes that all programme details are subject to change and asks people to check the website closer to the event. The celebration sits inside the wider Indian Film Festival of Melbourne season, which also includes the NAB IFFM Awards Night on 13 August 2026.
