Temple of Desire is a bold and visually stunning dance-theatre production by Melbourne-based Karma Dance Inc, directed and choreographed by Govind Pillai. The work brings together an ensemble of 16 classically-trained Bharatanatyam dancers who draw from their deep connection to the ancient Indian dance form to explore a pre-colonial world where the divine and the sensual unite with splendour and power. The production examines how pleasure and joy (kama) can become pathways to spiritual liberation (moksha), creating a subversive, sumptuous, and unapologetically bold reimagining of classical Indian dance.
Fresh from award-winning, sold-out seasons in Melbourne and Toronto, and ahead of its Sydney Opera House debut in June 2026, Temple of Desire challenges the traditional boundaries of Bharatanatyam by weaving in contemporary feminist and modern narratives. The work addresses themes of cultural loss, post-colonial trauma, identity, and liberation through breathtaking choreography, striking set design by Jonathan Fae, and atmospheric lighting by Max Woods. The performance has won the Director's Choice Award at Melbourne Fringe and Best Visual/Digital Design at the Green Room Awards.
The evening includes a post-show afterparty featuring DJ entertainment. The production runs for 90 minutes with no interval and is recommended for ages 16+ due to mature themes.
